Youth discounts & railcards

Youth discounts for train travellers are available for many rail operators via Loco2. You don't always need a railcard obtain a youth discount, but you may need to prove your age on board the train.

In addition to the standard concessions, further discounts may be available for young travellers with a railcard. These vary between countries; we've added details below.

Age qualifications for youth passengers vary across rail operators and countries. Please see Child & youth passenger age requirements for specific details.

For information on how to use a railcard on our site, please see Using railcards on Loco2.

General guidelines

You may find that the price of a youth ticket is the same as an adult fare, or that the ticket type defaults to adult. We automatically show the cheapest suitable fare, which may be an adult or youth ticket.

Depending on the time of travel and how far in advance you book, it may be cheaper to buy a non-flexible fare in advance than to book a flexible fare at short notice, even with the railcard discount. If appropriate, you should always check for cheap, non-flexible tickets first.

When travelling in possession of a youth ticket, you may be asked to show your passport or other photo ID to prove your age on the date of travel.

Youth discounts for UK trains

In the UK, the 16-25 Railcard gives 1/3 off most fares. Railcard holders can add the railcard to their search on Loco2 to find and book discounted fares. There are no discounts on standard fares for youth travellers who do not have a railcard.

Youth discounts for French trains

There are two youth railcards available in France: Jeune 12-17 and Jeune 18-27. Please see French train tickets - ticket types & discounts for more details about booking with a Jeune railcard on Loco2. There are no discounts on standard fares for youth travellers who do not have a railcard.

Youth discounts for Spanish trains

In Spain, holders of a Carné Joven railcard can obtain youth discounts on fully-flexible tickets. Youth discounts for German trains

In Germany, student travellers under the age of 27 can save 50% on the BahnCard 50. BahnCard 50 holders (suitable for frequent travellers) receive a 50% discount on non-saver fares. Youth discounts on Thalys

Youths (under the age of 26) who travel between Belgium and Luxembourg or a Dutch station are eligible for up to 35% off of standard fares. This is applied automatically when you search for a youth ticket, but please note that sometimes it's less expensive to book a non-flexible adult fare.

Youth discounts for all other rail operators

Other European countries offer youth discount cards beyond the standard youth fares you will find when searching on Loco2, but unfortunately we cannot currently accept these railcards. We will update this page as we add more railcards.
